The city will be re-constructing Western Avenue between Central Avenue and 4th Avenue this summer!
Construction begins May 27. This work is taking place during the school's summer break to minimize the impact to students. Work will be conducted one-half of the roadway at a time, tentatively scheduled as follows, to maintain one lane in each direction on Western Ave:
Western Ave NORTH side: May 27 - June 30
Western Ave SOUTH side: July 1 - August 3
Initial work on each half includes concrete replacement of identified ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) ramps, driveways, and valley gutters. Crews will then remove about 14" of asphalt and subsurface material, conduct grading activities, rebuild the subsurface of the roadway, and pave the base course (bottom layer) of asphalt. Once complete, crews will pave the surface course (top layer) of asphalt on the entire roadway, currently scheduled for the first weekend in August, and follow-on work will include striping and any needed adjustments.
Work will primarily take place during daytime hours, weekdays; however, concrete pours may take place during early morning hours to accelerate the schedule. Access will be maintained; however, should access need to be restricted to provide a safe work area, the contractor will ensure alternate access is available and signage place, as needed, to inform travelers. Thank you for your patience during this work.
This project is partially funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development through a Congressionally Directed Spending (earmark) allocation championed by late Congressman Raul Grijalva. The project's total estimated cost is $2,025,000, with $1,025,000 funded by the federal government and $1,000,000 funded by local sources.
