The City of Avondale has been operating a police substation and detention facility on Western Avenue since 2001. This facility is used to process non-violent misdemeanor arrestees and to hold them for short durations (generally less than six months), while providing office space for multiple police squads.

The current Avondale Detention Center and Police Substation buildings, located at 519 E. Western Avenue, were built in 1976 and 1986 respectively and remodeled in 2001. The buildings have exceeded their useful life and are scheduled for demolition, which will allow for a replacement Fire Station #171 to be built on the corner of Western Avenue and 6th Street.

The City is constructing a new facility located on the northwest corner of Eliseo C. Felix, Jr. Way, and Western Avenue. The site was selected for its proximity to the both the Avondale Complete Health Resource center and Old Town, and was already owned by the City. Included in the construction are enhanced safety and security features, a small training area for officers, and growth space for a future K-9 kennel and training area.

Site work for the project will begin in June 2023, with and expected completion in November 2024. The total budget for the project is $21,300,000.
