As the City's sewer infrastructure ages, rehabilitation and maintenance become more important to assure system integrity. Repairs may also be required to maintain compliance with federal, state and local regulations. The repairs for these 6-inch and 8-inch small diameter sewer lines will be completed using the methods of Cured-in-Place pipe (CIPP) lining, which limits the amount of open trenching required. This project will provide reliable infrastructure and sewer service to the residents of Avondale for years to come.

    UPDATE: This project is complete.

The City of Avondale has been operating a police substation and detention facility on Western Avenue since 2001. This facility is used to process non-violent misdemeanor arrestees and to hold them for short durations (generally less than six months), while providing office space for multiple police squads.

The current Avondale Detention Center and Police Substation buildings, located at 519 E. Western Avenue, were built in 1976 and 1986 respectively and remodeled in 2001. The buildings have exceeded their useful life and are scheduled for demolition, which will allow for a replacement Fire Station #171 to be built on the corner of Western Avenue and 6th Street.

The City is constructing a new facility located on the northwest corner of Eliseo C. Felix, Jr. Way, and Western Avenue. The site was selected for its proximity to the both the Avondale Complete Health Resource center and Old Town, and was already owned by the City. Included in the construction are enhanced safety and security features, a small training area for officers, and growth space for a future K-9 kennel and training area.

Site work for the project will begin in June 2023, with and expected completion in November 2024. The total budget for the project is $21,300,000.

Please let us know if you have any questions or comments about the project!

Intersection Improvements at Avondale Boulevard and Lower Buckeye Road

This project will install a traffic signal and corner ramps at the intersection of Avondale Boulevard and Lower Buckeye Road improving traffic flow on both streets and access to Phoenix Raceway and South Avondale. The traffic signal will be placed in its final location to account for the future addition of traffic lanes along both Avondale Boulevard and Lower Buckeye Road.

Improvements include a new traffic signal, roadway construction, ADA-compliant handicap ramps on all four corners of the intersections, and relocating SRP irrigation facilities crossing Avondale Boulevard. Lane reductions on Avondale Boulevard to one lane in each direction will be necessary to accommodate the work on the south side of the intersection. Further notification will be provided in advance before any lane restrictions occur.

Remember to slow down and use caution around construction workers and equipment. Motorists are advised to expect delays and to proceed with caution.

For questions or more information, please call Project Hotline at 602-235-2896.
